Graila
Merchant, Starbase 218
Graila
Graila

As soon as he’d reached the age of attainment Graila attended the local Business Academy in the Capital. It was during his time there that he first showed a keen mind for business and finding the next deal. One of his first business ideas was to gather a group of the smartest Ferengi students together and offer out copies of their work at a reasonable price. Unfortunately for Graila the Academy discovered his little business and insisted on taking some of the profit. This proved a valuable lesson for Graila; there was always someone else wanting what you had and made him consider Rule 168 in a different light; “Whisper your way to success.” From that day forward he’d always kept his business deals as secretive as possible. Upon his graduation from the Academy he was put to work in the family business by his domineering father. Spending his days grinding up dead beetles wasn’t the career that Graila had in mind, but until he had made enough profit to strike out on his own, he’d be stuck at Brailek’s Beetle Snuff Factory.

After working at the beetle snuff factory for a few months he began to see an opportunity to earn himself some extra profit. He started mixing a more potent mixture of the snuff and sold small quantities of this in and around the financial markets. He soon had a profitable little sideline going and the extra euphoric effects of his mixture proved popular with his customers. It took him a few years, and a little work but he finally had enough Latinum to leave the Beetle snuff factory; much to the surprise and disappoint of his father who fully expected Graila to take over from him.

Graila left Ferenginar in 2362 and headed for the various space ports across the quadrant. He had set his sights on making his fortune and dreamed of one day returning to Ferenginar as an exceptionally wealthy man. When considering the type of career that he wanted, the only thing that was important to Graila was that it didn’t involve any actual work. He was always keen to be the middleman, that way he could make a profit on both ends of the deal. He set himself up as a commodities broker, arranging small deals involving anything from shipments of ore, to huge crates full of Lokar Beans. Soon he was arranging deals between traders from all over the quadrant and making a tidy profit for himself.

It was during his time working as a broker that Graila first used some questionable practices. Often it was necessary that a shipment appeared different on the various shipping manifests, and Graila was also able to arrange for smooth custom inspections upon arrival at various space ports, thanks to knowing the personal habits of several customs officers. Despite being exceptionally good at his job, Graila soon began to realise that he wasn’t making the sort of profit that he felt he deserved. Customers were beginning to squeeze him and demand lower prices. This went against everything he believed in and he soon gave up his brokerage business, deciding instead to concentrate on the smaller, more exclusive items.

The year was now 2375 and Graila had no fixed residence, instead he spent his days travelling around the various star systems, finding much sort after objects and selling them on at extortionate price.

Half way through the year of 2380 Graila managed to find a rare Tkon artefact. The statuette was for sale in a small flea market on Rigel IV. Over the years Graila had become quite skilled at spotting valuable things and his expert eye soon identified the item as expensive, and he managed to barter with the trader and procure it for only 2 bars of Latinum. Overjoyed by his discovery he left the planet and headed directly for a Ferengi art collector that he knew. The collector was a little too excited upon laying his eyes on the statuette, revealing to Graila that he really wanted it. After some initial negotiations the collector wasn’t willing to meet the asking price. Graila was about to walk away and find another buyer when suddenly the collector offered him something on top of the Latinum. He was willing to give Graila as much Latinum as he had in his vault, along with an old freighter that he had lying disused at the local port. To Graila a ship wasn’t Latinum, but then he started to daydream about being the Captain of his own ship. He accepted the deal and left in his battered old hulk with 100 bars of Latinum in his bag. The ship was in a bad state of repair however, and he was forced to head to the nearest port to get some urgent repairs. Unfortunately he ended up spending all of the 100 bars on getting the ship back up and running, but he couldn’t have been happier; finally he was Captain Graila of the Rule 22: Profit in the Wind.

Graila and the Rule 22 became infamous amongst the less reputable people and he soon earned the reputation of a Ferengi who could get the job done. If you needed something urgently, or were looking for that hard to find item then Graila was your man. His sphere of customers grew and he was soon counting Starfleet officers and personnel amongst his clients. It was after meeting a regular customer, a human petty officer; that his luck finally began to turn bad. Whilst enjoying the delights of Rigel IV; a regular stop on his rounds, Graila was approached by a Tarkalean. The shifty looking man had apparently acquired a few old computer units that contained a lot of data. He was reluctant to say where they’d come from, but Graila was keen to get his hands on them. Recently he’d been doing business with an unknown human who was willing to buy any and all types of information and data. What he did with it all Graila had no idea, but he saw this as an opportunity to make some easy profit. He offered the Tarkalean 3 bars of Latinum, and was surprised when he agreed straight away.

The computers were delivered to the loading bay where the Rule 22 was docked, but as soon as he’d delivered them the Tarkalean made a rather quick exit. A little concerned by how this deal had gone Graila powered up one of the systems and began to look at what he’d brought. He trawled through the files and was a little disappointed to find that they were only old sensor data; not exactly what he was hoping. However, just as he was about to shut it down he came upon a secure portion of the file system. His interested piqued, and with his various talents he was soon able to hack into the files and open them up. What he found were hundreds of financial records detailing individual transactions between various sources. Looking closer at a few of these he soon began to panic, realising what a fool he’d been. In amongst the transactions he recognised a few names, the names of people whom he knew to be high ranking members of the Orion Syndicate. With his heart racing; panic rising deep inside him Graila shut down the computer and destroyed them with his phaser. He then had the remains reconstituted at the industrial replicator facility and hoped that he’d gotten away with it.

For a while it looked like he had, but then he recognised the face of a Tarkalean in a news broadcast. His body had been founding drifting in orbit of Rigel IV, and the time of death was estimated at being only hours after he’d delivered the computers to Graila. The Ferengis' fears that the Syndicate had discovered where the computers had gone had been realised, and he knew that it was only a matter of time before they traced them back to him.

By 2384 Graila was constantly on the run from the Syndicate, fearing that they would soon track him down. Despite the price on his head however, he still managed to arrange a few profitable deals. It was towards the beginning of the year that he headed to Starbase 218; a Starfleet run facility in the Cestus system to meet up with an old acquaintance. Graila had procured an old Terran figurine for his friend Alex Jackson. Alex was serving aboard the USS Athena, and Graila arranged to meet him at the Starbase. Once they’d concluded their business the two headed down to Cestus III to catch a baseball game. Whilst there Graila spotted a few opportunities, but during the trip home their transport craft had to crash land after one of the engines was ruined by an explosion. Everyone survived but investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by an explosive device. Grailas fear that the Syndicate were hot on his heels seemed to be realised.

Heading back to the Starbase he attempted to stay in the shadows, but soon realised that the Syndicate had a presence on the base. Keen to disappear he tried to sell the Rule 22 using a Ferengi contact. Unfortunately the gang who brought it killed the contact and walked off with the ship and Latinum. Grailas bad luck didn’t end there however, as the gang who’d stolen his ship were led by Francois LeHook. They’d stolen some Starfleet property and Graila was forced to reveal everything he knew about the ship, in return for a promise of safety aboard the Starbase.
